Birds: The Pribilof Islands in the Bering Sea are the site of one of the largest breeding colonies of seabirds in the northern hemisphere. The Pribilofs are surrounded by a front (a transition zone between vertically stratified and homogeneous water). PMEL scientists studied this area in the late 1970s and found an association between the front and the distribution of murres (Uria lomvia and U. aalge) and hypothesized that the front may enhance the availability of food (Kinder et al, 1983).
