Rappelling Adventures

"Learn To" Rappel Adventures

What:Come learn a fun, cool and risky high adventure sport that you can enjoy your whole life. Learn the Xtreme sport of rappelling, where you will lower yourself down a cliff face using only a rope, harness, hardware, and your own strength and skill. Once you’ve mastered the 20 foot beginner cliff, get your adrenaline pumping on the 90 foot intermediate cliff! Don’t forget to breathe! Experienced Outdoor Recreation Adventure Leaders will emphasize safety, as well as proper technique. Each guest needs to wear sturdy shoes (hiking or good fitting tennis shoes), and clothes that you can move in. Guests also need to bring water, lunch, snacks, sunscreen and a hat. Dress for the weather.

Who: There are twelve spaces for youth ages 11-17.

Prerequisite: Must be able to hike one mile.

Cost: The cost is $10 per guest.

When:  

  • June 13  Beginning Rappel-White Wash  7:45AM-4:00PM

Where:White Wash, part of the Piedra Lisa Open Space, in the Sandia foothills. Rappelling trips meet at the Parks and Recreation Administration Building at 1801 4th Street NW, 15 minutes prior to departure, and then guests are transported in a City vehicle to the rappelling area.

How: Pre-registration is required. Space is filled on a “first come/first served” basis, so call quickly. More information and registration forms are available by several methods. "Expert" Rappel Adventures

What:If you already know how to rappel, then you know it’s a fun, really cool and risky high adventure sport that you can enjoy your whole life. And this 180 foot rappel off of Battleship rock will certainly get your adrenaline pumping! Don’t forget to breathe! Experienced Outdoor Recreation Adventure Leaders will emphasize safety, as well as proper technique. Each guest needs to wear sturdy shoes (hiking or good fitting tennis shoes) for the moderate hike to the top, and clothes that you can move in. Guests also need to bring water, lunch, snacks, sunscreen and a hat. Dress for the weather.

Who: There are ten spaces for youth ages 14-17.

Prerequisite: Must be able to hike one mile and have prior experience rappelling.

Cost: The cost is $10 per guest.

When:

  • July 1  Expert Rappel-Battleship Rock  7:45AM-5:00PM

Where:Battleship Rock, in the Jemez Mountains. Rappelling trips meet 15 minutes early, (to ensure timely departure) at the Parks and Recreation Administration Building at 1801 4th Street NW, and then guests are transported in a city vehicle to the rappelling area.
