The Deputy CIO supports the CIO in the administrative operation of the Office and its responsibilities. The Deputy CIO is responsible for IT policy and planning and resource management. Management activities include workforce management, acquisition management, requirements management, and configuration management. The Deputy is responsible for budget formulation, tracking, reporting, and supporting budgetary documentation. He is responsible for information systems quality assurance and independent system and infrastructure acceptance testing. His office is responsible for responding to requests for information from oversight government offices and from the public under the Freedom of Information Act.

The Deputy's Executive Office consists of three major offices; the Office of Technical Plans and Policy, the Office of Acquisition Management, and the Office of System Product Assurance.
