Rural Development’s Community
Program delivers
funding and technical expertise to help communities literally from the
ground up, brick by brick, pipe by pipe. One of the greatest needs of rural
communities is infrastructure development --- water and waste water
facilities. The bulk of the $111 million in Community Program funds
allocated in 2007 was divided between three major programs - water and waste water projects,
community facilities and the telecommunications/electric projects.
The economic health of rural communities and the
ability to attract new residents depends on critical infrastructure. Rural
Development assistance --- direct and through local partnerships --- helps
remove this barrier to economic development.
One special initiative is the Economic Impact
Initiative (EII)
Grant program, which provides priority funding for communities
with especially high unemployment rates.
In 2007, more than $707,000 in EII grants were awarded to rural
communities to help fund the purchase of new fire engines, police cars,
communications equipment and other first-responder needs.
USDA Rural Development in California
builds stronger rural communities by financing projects ranging from health
clinics, fire engines, communications equipment, medical and education
links, water projects, schools,
airports and a host of other important community initiatives.
No community can thrive without adequate community facilities. USDA
Rural Development’s Community Program staff is committed to filling these
important needs.
