Shuttle Processing Note
At Launch Pad 39A workers have begun work to replace Shuttle Atlantis’ faulty rudder/speed brake power drive unit (PDU). Today, liquid nitrogen lines were used to freeze portions of the PDU’s six hydraulic lines to prevent air intrusion. Once the fluid in the lines was frozen, workers moved the Rotating Service Structure (RSS) away from the Shuttle to accommodate crane activities and the actual replacement of the PDU.

The PDU replacement effort is expected to take about 4 to 6 hours tonight and then the RSS will be moved back around Atlantis. On Thursday, technicians will reconnect the hydraulic lines. By Friday managers plan to complete electrical and mechanical connections and then reinstall the rudder/speed brake access panels. Over the weekend engineers will conduct a frequency response test to confirm a successful PDU replacement.

Tomorrow morning, workers plan to replace a leaky hydraulic discharge hose on the main pump for auxiliary power unit (APU) No. 1. Also slated for replacement tomorrow is an electronics box located in the orbiter’s aft compartment. Managers expect this unplanned work to be accommodated in parallel will other processing efforts at the pad. An additional hotfire test of APU No. 1 is likely.
