The U.S. Agency for International Development is committed to helping developing countries prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. Investing in research to develop new tools and technologies [PDF, 1.3MB] for HIV prevention is a critical part of this effort. USAID collaborates with governmental and non-governmental partners to develop and evaluate safe and effective prevention technologies such as microbicides and vaccines, and to study emerging issues in HIV prevention such as the relationship between male circumcision and HIV transmission.
  • Microbicides
Ongoing biomedical and behavioral research to develop and test technologies for preventing HIV transmission is a hallmark of USAID's HIV/AIDS program.

  • Vaccines
Prevention is a primary strategy in the fight against the worldwide HIV pandemic, and a safe and effective HIV vaccine would provide the ultimate tool to prevent HIV infection.

  • Male Circumcision [PDF, 127B]
The relationship between male circumcision and risk of HIV transmission is an emerging issue of interest in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

  • Report to Congress: Health-Related Research and Development Activities at USAID - June 2006 [PDF, 881KB]
The U.S. Congress requested that USAID provide a report describing its role in the research, development, and application cycle and its efforts to coordinate research and development activities with other agencies. With this report USAID provides a proactive strategy for using research funds and a plan for stimulating the development and introduction of key products to address diseases affecting the developing world and countries in transition.
