The Greater Manchester Family YMCA is a family-oriented organization dedicated to developing healthy lifestyles in youth, families, and individuals of all ages. The Greater Manchester YMCA is currently renovating and upgrading existing sites, constructing new facilities, and expanding current programs to promote the well-being of our 12,000 members and community. An expanded youth and family wellness center and new Center of Lifetime Wellness will serve the yet-to-be-fit population and make the YMCA more welcoming than ever. The YMCA’s variety of programs--preschool and school-age child care, fitness, sports, adventure, teen and adventure, and summer camps build spirit, mind, and body.

The focus of the “Get Healthy Be Active” program is to promote and practice physical activity and obesity prevention in adult populations in worksites and community settings, and organizations serving seniors. Resources include web based, worksite wellness materials including fact sheets, stair prompts and newsletter templates, as well as a prevention focused activity log and pedometer based program. The KidPower! Program uses a 4-week activity log and pedometer to encourage physical activity in 10-14 year olds. Younger students track their daily activity for one week using a physical activity "tracker" sheet. KidPower! materials and quarterly seasonal "backpack stuffers" teach parents and kids about the importance of daily physical activity, healthy eating, and tips to reduce "screen" and sedentary time.

From mid-May through early August, I plan to run from San Diego, CA, to Van Buren, ME, in order to raise awareness through presentations and my website of the importance of physical fitness, especially among youth.  I'm teaming with the United Way so that I hopefully can reach more people through already-established programs while raising money for them.  I'll be averaging just over 40 miles a day, trying to be a positive role model who's willing to step outside the box and do something different in order to make people aware of how important it is to be fit.
