Dan Anderson's work on the freezing of water droplets in
collaboration with S.H. Davis (Northwestern University) and M.G.
Worster (Univeristy of Cambridge) was featured in the Fall 1996
issue of McCormickDimension, a quarterly publication of the
School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern
University.
-
Isabel Beichl participated on advisory panel for Army in Durham, NC
to evaluate a Geometry Center that they are supporting.
-
Paul Boggs has been appointed to the Advisory Board for the newly-formed
High Performance Computing Users (HPCU)
Group. He will also serve as a member of the Editorial
Board for its web-based, peer-reviewed journal, The Journal of HPC Users.
The HPCU is a national organization whose purpose is to "promote the exchange
of information among users of high performance computing and communications
products (hardware/software) and between the users and manufacturers of these
products.'' High performance computing is an important thrust for ITL and is
viewed as crucial for the future of the scientific programs at NIST. The
HPCU group seeks to participate proactively in the development of scalable
parallel processing as a technology. It is managed by the users themselves
and is vendor independent, but serves as a liaison to vendors, such as
Silicon Graphics/Cray and Intel. The Advisory Board draws its members from
the Federal Laboratories, academia, funding agencies, and vendors; it makes
recommendations on activities for the Group.
-
Paul Boggs served on the Review Board for the Center for Computing
Sciences in Bowie, MD and on the Review Panel for the US Army
Research Office in Research Triangle Park, NC. He also continues to
serve on the Editorial Boards of the SIAM News and Applied
Mathematics Letters.
-
Eleazer Bromberg served on the Review Board for the Center for
Computing Sciences in Bowie, MD.
-
Ronald Boisvert serves as Editor-in-Chief of the
Transactions on Mathematical
Software published by the
Association for Computing
(ACM). He also serves as a member of the ACM
Publications Board and IFIP Working Group
2.5 (Numerical Software)
-
Tim Burns served on the NSF Division of Mathematical Sciences
Materials and Mechanics Panel, January 16-18, 1997, Arlington, VA.
-
Tony Kearsley, Dan Lozier, and Bonita Saunders were videotaped for a
career video and CD-ROM produced by American Mathematical Society,
Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial
and Applied Mathematics. Under a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan
Foundation, the three mathematical societies are producing guidance
material for students interested in careers in the mathematical
sciences.
-
Daniel Lozier serves as an Associate Editor of Mathematics of
Computation published by the American Mathematical Society (AMS).
-
G. McFadden serves on the editorial boards for the SIAM Journal on
Applied Mathematics and the Journal of Computational Physics.
-
William Mitchell's work on adaptive multilevel methods was
recognized by several external organizations. He was invited to
participate in an adaptive methods workshops at the Mathematisches
Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach in Germany and at the Institute for
Mathematics and its Applications at the University of Minnesota.
He was also invited to spend two weeks at the Institute for
Computer Applications in Science and Engineering, NASA Langley
Research Center, Hampton, Virginia as a visiting scientist.
-
D. Porter joined the steering committee of the Micromagnetic
Modeling Activity Group (muMAG), sponsored by the NIST Center for
Theoretical and Computational Materials Science (CTCMS).
-
Roldan Pozo received the Presidential Early Career Award for
Scientists and Engineers in ceremonies at the White House on
December 16, 1996. This is the highest honor bestowed by the US
government for outstanding scientists and engineers beginning their
independent research careers.
-
Karin Remington was elected to the Board of Directors of the
ACM Special Interest Group on Numerical Mathematics
(SIGNUM). She also serves as Information
