Several important documents provide direction and guidance for the NIETP. These include:
Presidential Decision Directive PDD-63 (22 MAY 98)
Plan of action on the findings of the President's Commission on Critical Infrastructure Protection (PCCIP) of Oct 97.
- Requires Vulnerability Awareness and Education Programs within both the Government and private sector to sensitize people regarding the importance of security and train them to security standards, particularly regarding cyber systems.
National Security Directive (NSD)-42* (5 JUL 90)
National Policy for the Security of National Security Telecommunications and Information Systems.
- Designated the Director, NSA, as National Manager for National Security Telecommunications and Information Systems Security. This includes National Security Systems which are those telecommunications and information systems operated by the U.S. Government, its contractors, or agents, that contain classified information or that involve: intelligence activities related to national security; command and control of military forces; equipment that is an integral part of a weapon or weapon system; or equipment that is critical to the direct fulfillment of military or intelligence missions.
National Security Telecommunications Information Systems Security Directive 500* (25 FEB 93)
Information Systems Security (INFOSEC) Education and Training and Awareness.
- Establishes the requirement for federal departments and agencies to develop and implement INFOSEC education, training and awareness programs.
National Security Telecommunications Information Systems Security Directive 501* (16 NOV 92)
National Training for Information Systems Security (INFOSEC) Professionals.
- Establishes the requirement for federal departments and agencies to implement training programs for Information Systems Security (INFOSEC) professionals.
