Earth Day at the Canal
Comet staff report

Project W.E.E.D. (Wabash & Erie Earth Day) attracted 61 people of all ages to Canal Park to volunteer their services to the Canal.

Many family groups, scouts, 4-Hers and other community members came to the workday.

"Each year we invite the public to come out and enjoy spring by cleaning trails, renovating flower beds and general outside park grooming," said Dan McCain, chairman of Delphi Historic Trails. "In addition, the Delphi Psi Iota Xi sorority provided a free lunch in Canal Park. Afterwards, many of the youth enjoyed a boat ride up and down the canal."

For those who worked, there is a reward. The USDA/NRCS Earth Team will be giving shirts or hats to all who worked a day or more during the past year.

"The payoff comes on National Trails Day June 2 when we celebrate with our volunteers and dole out the shirts," McCain said.

For those who want to volunteer and earn a shirt, the next workday is "Flower Day" in Canal Park on Saturday, May 19 beginning at 9 a.m.
