Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC)


The ERSP seeks to encourage the incorporation of computational modeling as a component of subsurface research. Whether at the molecular scale, intermediate scales or the field scale, conceptual and computational models of processes affecting contaminant transport are important elements of ERSP investigations. Computational models serve as integral components of subsurface research and help to clarify research hypotheses and guide future research directions. ERSP science teams, particularly the field research components of the program, are encouraged to partner with modelers and computational scientists to provide state-of-the-science descriptions of subsurface processes and predictions of contaminant transport. These efforts are ultimately aimed at providing science-based predictions of contaminant mobility to aid decision-making for environmental remediation at DOE sites.

The Environmental Remediation Sciences Division (ERSD) partners with the U.S. DOE Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) under the SciDAC (Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing) program. The SciDAC program seeks to foster connections between application scientists and math/computer scientists to facilitate the incorporation of high performance computing (peta-scale) into research programs funded throughout DOE's Office of Science. ERSD in collaboration with ASCR funded two SciDAC projects in FY 2006 specifically focused on simulating the fate and transport of subsurface contaminants in groundwater These highly collaborative projects allow ERSD to expand its breadth of research by including high performance computing as a component of its research portfolio.
