The American College of Surgeons (ACS) was established in 1913, at the initiative of Franklin Martin, MD, FACS, Chicago, IL, as a surgical society dedicated to promoting the highest standards of surgical care through education of, and advocacy, for its Fellows and their patients, and to safeguarding standards of care in an optimal and ethical practice environment.
The ACS Archives office documents and preserves the history of the College through the records it has produced since it was established. It consists of approximately 300 linear feet of materials including paper records and bound materials; film, video, and audio tapes of oral history; photos and photo albums; and other artifacts.
The documents on this Web site are a small sample of the depth and variety of records found in the ACS Archives.

In May 2005 the College began compiling a digital archive of some of its historic photos and documents. One photo or document is now regularly presented as an online "Highlight of the Month" from the American College of Surgeons Archives.
In 2008, the College began a pilot digitization project, scanning a total of 2000 pages from four of its richest series of records:
- The Franklin H. Martin, MD, FACS Memoirs
- The Eleanor Grimm Notebooks
- The Board of Regents photos
- The Clinical Congress daily
The first two series include sample volumes only; the second two series represent the entire collection of Board of Regents photos held in the Archives and all of the Clinical Congress daily newspapers produced from 1911 to 1979, which are held in the archives.
Please return to this page after viewing the Digital Collections and complete a 1-minute survey about your experience. Thank you.
