Mr. Bayer is currently Acting Division Director for the Environmental Remediation Sciences Division. He is also Program Manager for the William R. Wiley Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), a National Scientific User Facility located at the Hanford Site in Richland, WA, as well as the Program Manager for elements of the Environmental Remediation Sciences Program (ERSP).

Mr. Bayer received a B.A. in Biology from James Madison University in 1980, and an M.S. in Biology from Western Kentucky University in 1984. Prior to joining DOE, Mr. Bayer worked for Energetics, in Columbia, MD, where he supported DOE and other federal and state agencies in the areas of fossil fuels bioprocessing and recovery, health effects of electric and magnetic fields and environmental impacts analyses and regulatory assessments. Mr. Bayer previously worked at Howard University conducting electron microscopy and cryomicroscopy research on structure-function relationships and molecular cell-to-cell communication through gap junctions in insect tissue.
