Estuaries are connected to many different cycles on Earth including the nutrient cycle, the water cycle and the cycle of life.

Estuaries are places where water, nutrients, organic material, and minerals recycle. For example, in estuaries, minerals and nutrients build up, while floods and rains flush them out to be recycled in the nutrient cycle. Also, fresh water and saltwater mix and recycle as part of the water cycle. Animals migrate in and out of estuaries, reproduce, die, decompose and replenish organic matter. Just as the sun rises and sets, Earth’s cycles begin and end, to begin again. Estuaries play an important role in these cycles.
