Western Pacific Council Overview

The Western Pacific Fishery Management Council (WPFMC) is one of eight regional fishery management councils created by the 1976 Magnuson Fisheries Conservation and Management Act, renamed Magnuson Stevens Fisheries Conservation and Management Act in 1996, to manage living marine resources within that area.

The WPFMC is responsible for the creation of management plans for fishery resources (FMPs) in Federal waters off the coasts of American Samoa, Guam, Hawaii, the Northern Mariana Islands and other US Pacific islands. These FMPs are for: Western Pacific crustaceans; Western Pacific precious corals; bottomfish and seamount groundfish; Western Pacific pelagics; and coral reef ecosystems. The EFH descriptions and identifications for the Western Pacific's FMPs were approved on February 3, 1999, except for coral reef ecosystems, which were approves on June 14, 2002. This website is designed to inform viewers about these Western Pacific EFH descriptions and identifications.
