South Atlantic Council Overview

The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (SAFMC) is one of eight regional fishery management councils created by the 1976 Magnuson Fisheries Conservation and Management Act, renamed Magnuson Stevens Fisheries Conservation and Management Act in 1996, to manage living marine resources within that area.

The SAFMC is responsible for the creation of management plans for fishery resources (FMPs) in Federal waters off the coasts of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and east Florida to Key West. These FMPs are for: snapper/grouper; Atlantic coast red drum; Atlantic shrimp fishery; Atlantic coral, coral reefs, and live/hard bottom habitats; and Atlantic golden crab. The EFH descriptions and identifications for these FMPs were approved on June 3, 1999. This website is designed to inform viewers about these Pacific EFH descriptions and identifications.
