Sustainability - Take Action Take Action

Want to help keep Albuquerque's air clean and blue? Here are a few ideas:
  • Don't drive a car without a gas cap. Gas caps keep fumes from escaping and polluting our air.
  • Report smoking vehicles.
  • Drive less each week by using ABQ Ride, the Rail Runner, or your bicycle.
  • Burn only clean, seasoned wood in your stove or fireplace.

Sustainability - Air

Albuquerque is known for its big, beautiful skies. Keeping those skies clean and clear is the responsibility of the Mayor, City staff, and all of Albuquerque's citizens!

"Please join us in our efforts to keep Albuquerque pollution-free. There are a lot of things that you can do to help us all breathe a little easier. It’s the right thing to do."

- Albuquerque Mayor Martin J. Chávez, November 2006 Air Shed Newsletter

How The City Takes Care of Our Air

Despite a growing population, Albuquerque has maintained national air quality standards. That makes Albuquerque a great place to live and to do business.

How have we done it?

  • Careful study - City staff studies air quality conditions using sophisticated monitoring stations and weather forecasts. Albuquerque operates one ozone monitor per 65,000 citizens. Other large cities have only one per 250,000 people!
  • Predicting impacts - Using data gathered from monitoring stations, our staff forecasts the effects of weather, temperature inversion, and citizen activities like driving cars and burning wood.
  • Effective regulation - City staff institutes and enforces regulations like no-burn days to encourage citizens and businesses to maintain our clean air.
