Research Interests
My general areas of interest are the physiology and biophysics of biological membranes. The problems that I have been studying are the mechanism & regulation of calcium triggered exocytosis, and the coupling mechanism of exocytosis to compensatory endocytosis. My laboratories current specific aim is to understand how integral membrane proteins, such as ion channels and receptors, are targeted to and maintained in specific cell-surface microdomains. Our approach is to use multiphoton laser scanning microscopy (MPLSM), spectral imaging, fluorescent lifetime imaging (FLIM), fluorescence resonance energy transfer imaging (FRET), and computational modeling & analysis, in conjunction with standard cell & molecular biological methods to study membrane trafficking in living cells and organisms.
