Magnetic Indices

There are numerous indices of magnetic activity. The International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA) offically recognizes magnetic indices aa, Am, Kp, Dst, and AE. More information about the IAGA indices is available from ISGI - International Services for Geomagnetic Indices (off-site). More information about magnetic indices is available from:

Task force

  • Task force established to undertake an assessment or determination of users needs: Richard Holme of GFZ and Chris Balch of SEG/NOAA.
  • Task force established to undertake a report on the Polar Cap Index
    • Dr. Troshichev, Dr. Rassmussen and Dr. Papitashvilli will produce a report describing the PC family, method of producing, and use of index in sufficient detail to enable others to continue to produce the index. The report should include such things as a table of coefficients. (Done) Richard Coles and Michelle Minvielle will referee the PC Index report. (Status?) Upon completion of PC Index review, the WGV2 (chairs) will draft a letter for the President of IAGA to send to the institutes operating Thule (Greenland) and Vostok (Antarctica) stations. (Not done)
