What is Podcasting?

Podcasting is a digitally recorded audio or video file made available on the Internet so they can be downloaded onto computers or portable listening devices such as iPods or other MP3 players. Podcasting allows users to subscribe to a feed of new audio files using "podcatching" software (a type of aggregator), which periodically checks for and downloads new audio files automatically. Any digital audio player or computer with audio-playing software can play Podcasts. Users can also download Podcasts to their desktop computer and play them using standard media software.

How do I listen to a Podcast on my computer?

Individual Podcasts can be downloaded and listened to in two ways:

  1. Podcasts can be downloaded and watched or listened to individually using any commercial audio/video player directly from the AIDS.gov website, by clicking on the appropriate “View the Video” or “Listen to the Audio” link.
  2. Podcasts can be watched or listened to using commercial Podcasting applications available for download. A list of some Podcast applications is available from NIH Research Radio.

How do I listen to Podcast feeds in my Podcast software?

  1. Click on the “Subscribe to AIDS.gov Podcasts” link found on the AIDS.gov Podcast page
  2. Copy the new window's URL (Uniform Resource Locator). That's the internet address that appears at the top of the page. For the AIDS.gov Podcast it should be: http://www.aids.gov/podcast.xml.
  3. Paste the copied URL/address into your Podcast application. Each application has a specific way of doing this. For instance, in iTunes, go to the Advanced menu, select “Subscribe to Podcast” and paste the URL into the dialog box. In Juice, go to the Subscriptions menu, click on the "Add New Feed" button and paste the address into the dialog box.
  4. The Podcast software will update your subscriptions on a regular interval. This way when a new Podcast is made available, you can access it directly from your Podcast application without having to come to the site. Most programs will also allow you to manually update a feed to look for new content.

What is the strange code I see when I try to subscribe?

If you are seeing a strange code when you try to subscribe to the AIDS.gov Podcasts, you are seeing the code that is meant for either a Podcast application or a RSS reader (a program that can understand the code – for more about RSS readers, visit the CDC’s “RSS Help” page [this will change to the “AIDS.gov RSS Help” page in the new UI]). Some older versions of browsers, such as Internet Explorer 6, cannot read the code correctly. The URL should be placed into your Podcast software or a RSS reader to view the page correctly, or it can be viewed in most newer browsers such as Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox 2.0 (or higher).
