Collection Summary

Dr. Abdellah's papers in the National Library of Medicine reflect the breadth of her personal and professional interests. The material is divided into four series. The first two series consist of copies of her publications and speeches. They demonstrate Abdellah's research interests in patient care, nursing practice, nursing research, and the care of the elderly. Correspondence about some of the speeches and publications, as well as reviews of and advertisements for her books are also found in the series. The third series is composed of Abdellah's scrapbooks. They document fully her professional development, activities, and awards. Of special note is the fourth series, an extensive collection of photographs that serve as a visual record of federal nursing service and the Public Health Service in the 1970s and 1980s. Dr. Abdellah's official files as an officer of the Public Health Service remain with the PHS.
