Welcome to the fall 1999 issue of Making Cents, the online newsletter that tells you what's new and striking at the United States Mint. Be sure to check back every 3 months for a new issue.
Sacagawea and her baby are covering lots of territory these days—from parade floats to outer space. On November 25, 1999, mother and baby cruised the streets of New York—top a float in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The United States Mint's float, a replica of an old stagecoach from the Denver Mint, had five-foot-tall images of the coin. When the float stopped in front of Herald Square, the pop-country band "SHeDaisy" sang its hit "Little Good-Byes." (The band's name is taken from a Native American word meaning "my sisters.")
This past July, a dozen 22-karat gold copies of the new Sacagawea dollar traveled on the Columbia Space Shuttle. The coins journeyed with another pioneering woman: Eileen Collins, the first female shuttle commander.

All five 1999 state quarters are now out and easy to get your hands on. On July 19, the first Georgia quarters rolled out. Governor Ray Barnes gave this "peach" of a coin to each kid at the release ceremony, held in Atlanta. Helping Barnes celebrate the state's new quarter were two players from the Atlanta Falcons—Keith Brookings and Jessie Tuggle.
Then on October 7, the Philadelphia Mint hosted the first-strike ceremony for the Connecticut quarter. A special guest helped Director Philip Diehl mint the first official "charter oak" quarter. Who was the lucky dog? Make that lucky frog—Kermit, the 50 State Quarters™ Program "spokesfrog," pressed the magic minting button!
