The State of Estuarine Education: K–12 Needs Assessment
| |
J. K. L. Hammerman, A. Ibanez, D. Barstow |
|
More than one thousand classroom teachers and informal science educators shared their thoughts and opinions on teaching estuarine related topics via an online needs assessment. This assessment - which determined obstacles to teaching about estuaries, and teacher’s preferences for accessing and utilizing various educational products – was used to shaping the development of teaching and professional development materials about estuaries. |

Ocean Observatories and the Role of Federal Ocean Education Networks
| |
L. Rom, G. Muller-Parker, A. Ibanez, M. Kaplan, V. Clark |
|
Ocean observing systems provide a focus around which the efforts of various federally-funded ocean education networks can be coordinated. This paper explores the connections that exist and highlights opportunities for collaboration. The education networks addressed include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Estuarine Research Reserve System, the National Marine Sanctuaries Program, Sea Grant Educators Network and the National Science Foundation's Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence. |

Utilizing Data from NOAA’s Observing Systems to Achieve Environmental Literacy
| |
C. McDougall, A. Ibanez, S. White |
|
NOAA possesses a vast array of observing systems that monitor oceanic, atmospheric, and terrestrial parameters. The streaming data from these systems offers broad opportunities to create real-time visualizations of dynamic Earth processes and to capture rare and spectacular events that occur on regional or global geographic scales. Making these visualizations available and understandable by the general public is a tall task. The potential return on investment, however, is large. By enabling the public to observe environmental processes and long-term trends occurring in their “backyards” and demonstrating the link these “backyard” processes have to global processes, we can build an environmentally literate public that makes more informed decisions. |

SWMP/IOOS Real-Time Data in K-12 Classrooms: A Front-end Evaluation
| |
Chris Parsons |
|
This front-end evaluation was designed to investigate the ways by which kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers and students can use real-time data and associated education products to understand and appreciate the role that the environment, in particular the ocean, plays in their lives. |

EstuaryLive is a live, interactive, field-based experience that brings estuaries to the audience through the Internet. The program showcases our nation's estuaries and targets K-12 students, but many colleges and universities participate as well. EstuaryLive is an innovative model that combines technology and the use of inquiry based approaches to enhance current teaching and learning practices around estuarine science. The use of the technology in EstuaryLive helps engage the students in estuarine science; address scientific inquiry; present scientific data; and support access and communication between learners. This interactive program provides students with an exciting and new way to learn about these unique ecosystems. |

Inventory and Assessment of K-12 and Professional Teacher Development Programs in NOAA's National Estuarine Research Reserve System
| |
Pandion Systems, Inc. |
|
This report is constitutes a K-12 and professional teacher development inventory and assessment of the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) education programs. The report provides baseline data, synthesis, and recommendations for program improvements in support of the NERRS Strategic Plan. The study’s includes 1) an inventory and assessment, both quantitative and qualitative, of programming for K-12 and professional teacher development across the Reserves and how these programs integrate state and national standards, recommendations for improved program evaluation and performance measurement, recommendations for improving program design and implementation, as well as needs for national-level support and capacity building activity and recommendations and associated implications for a national “niche” or system-wide program or activity in the areas of K-12 education and professional teacher development. |
