Accomplishments Towards a New Direction
In 2006, the American people demanded a New Direction: : to make America safer, to help restore the American dream, and to restore accountability and fiscal responsibility to the people's government. Six years of indifference and inaction had left the American people wondering who would take their side. The 110th Congress brought new faces, new energy and a steadfast commitment to a New Direction. The first woman Speaker of the House in American history gaveled open the Congress with a pledge to make its work about America’s children. Despite the obstacles thrown up by the President’s vetoes and his Republican allies who sustained them, Congress is focused on a New Direction that makes American families and children, and our future generations, our highest priority.
We are working to Make America Safer—rebuilding our military, supporting our troops, military families and veterans, and reducing our dependence on foreign oil.
We are working to Strengthen Our Economy—to help Americans struggling with a housing crisis, college debt, rising energy and health care costs, paychecks stuck in neutral, and concerns about the safety of our food, toys, medicine and other products.
We are working to Restore Accountability—passing sweeping lobby and ethics reform, instituting an Office of Congressional Ethics, and conducting rigorous oversight over the Bush Administration.
