Sally Mayer resides in City Council District 7 which she refers to as the “Heart of the Heights”. She is originally from Texas but considers New Mexico her home as she has lived in New Mexico since 1975.
She attended Austin College in Sherman, Texas and Southern Methodist University in Dallas, as well as the University of New Mexico. Councilor Mayer has a strong background in Banking and has also been a volunteer kindergarten and fourth grade teacher, an accountant for Frito-Lay and managed the Hotel St. Bernard in Taos Ski Valley.
Councilor Mayer first became active in politics when she lived in Albuquerque’s North Valley. Then, while living in the historic Huning Highland neighborhood of Albuquerque, she became involved with her Neighborhood Association.
In addition to the many issues relating to her District, Councilor Mayer has been working on re-writing the City’s Animal Ordinance. Her love of all animals is the motivating force behind her dedication to ensure that animals are well-cared for in the Albuquerque area. Councilor Mayer hopes that the new ordinance will be a model that other cities will follow.
Since first being elected to this office in the Fall 2001, Councilor Mayer has stressed accessibility and accountability in local government. She hosts monthly meetings for constituents in her district on a variety of topics that are of particular interest to them. These meetings are one of the ways the Councilor attempts to make government more accessible to her constituents. In an effort to increase government’s accountability, Councilor Mayer has served on the Finance Committee and the Internal Audit Committee for the past three years.
Councilor Mayer has two children, Ryan and Monique, and a son-in-law, Andy.
