Washington, D.C. — The United States Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), will provide $100,000 to support emergency efforts in response to the devastating earthquake that struck the province of West Sumatra on March 6.
Due to the significant damage caused by the earthquake, U.S. Charge d`Affaires John A. Heffern declared a disaster for the affected areas. Local authorities report that the 6.3 magnitude earthquake has resulted in the deaths of at least 70 people and injuries to more than 200. Approximately 3,600 homes have been damaged and many people have been displaced by the earthquake.
U.S. Government assistance includes the provision of immediate relief supplies such as hygiene kits, plastic sheets, water containers, cooking utensils, and sleeping mats for victims.
USAID will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as appropriate.
