USAID Supports Education and Employment Summit

March 06, 2007

HYDERABAD Education specialists from six-countries gathered in Hyderabad today at the annual “Education and Employment Summit.” The meeting brings together partners of the Education and Employment Alliance, an initiative supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

Summit participants from Egypt, Indonesia, Morocco, Pakistan, the Philippines and India will exchange experiences on working with public and private organizations to support youth education and employment. The Education and Employment Alliance has over 20 programs that support youth education and training that rely on resources from governments, corporations, NGOs and community groups.

In India, the Education and Employment Alliance supports the Quality Education and Skills Training (QUEST) Alliance, an initiative which seeks to improve education and workforce training for disadvantaged youth.

Representatives of the Education and Employment Alliance’s corporate and other partner organizations participated in the Summit, including the Azim Premji Foundation, the Community and Progress Foundation, Dr. Reddy’s Foundation, Pratham, Microsoft, WIPRO and Lucent Technologies.

In India, USAID’s support for education focuses on improving the quality of education through the use of technology and other strategies to reach underserved and vulnerable children. Programs including QUEST reach more than 14 million children in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal.
