Estuaries are some of the most
productive ecosystems
in the world.
Life in estuaries is complex and
diverse
. Organisms are not distributed evenly throughout different estuaries, nor are they distributed evenly throughout all parts of estuaries. Can any organism live in any area of an estuary? The answer is no. Organisms are adapted to live in certain types of estuaries and in certain estuarine conditions. Estuaries, and the plants and animals that live in them, can be described and grouped in many different ways, including by habitats, by tidal zones, by their role in the food web and by their native land.
