Recreational Drugs

I.  Recreational drugs include illicit drugs (e.g., marijuana, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine) as well as social drugs (e.g., caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol). Couples planning a pregnancy should talk with their doctor about use of these drugs and any medicines–whether prescribed or over-the-counter. Some drugs and drug combinations can affect fertility and/or fetal development. As some of these drugs or drug combinations can be very addictive, abstinence may not be possible during pregnancy. It is important to provide information on drug usage to the health care provider, so that appropriate precautions can be in place during the pregnancy and at birth of the infant.
