The Medical Oncology Branch (MOB) has the following major functions: 1) clinical research; 2) clinical care; and 3) clinical training. The purpose of these functions is:

1) To develop novel therapeutic research strategies for the treatment of cancer and to test those strategies by conducting clinical research in medical oncology across a spectrum of diseases and disease mechanisms;

2) To provide clinical care to adult cancer patients enrolled in research protocols, including in-patient and out-patient care services, to support the clinical research effort emanating from principal investigators in laboratories and branches across the Center for Cancer Research (CCR); and,

3) To train physician-scientists in a laboratory-to-clinic translational research setting to promote the development of their expertise in medical oncology research and to support their board certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Medical Oncology Branch Fellowship Program
A world leader in cancer research and training, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) recruits fellows for an intensive three-year assignment in medical oncology. Since its inception in 1955, the Medical Oncology Branch Fellowship Program has helped train hundreds of outstanding oncologists and researchers.

Medical Oncology Branch Scientific Review Committee
The purpose of the Medical Oncology Branch (MOB) Scientific Review Committee (SRC) is to perform a review of a research protocol prior to submission to the Protocol Review Monitoring Committee (PRMC).

It is the goal of the committee to provide a forum for principal investigators and/or research staff to openly discuss new research protocols and present an exchange of ideas in an informal relaxed environment.

In an effort to help strengthen the research plan, the protocols are reviewed for scientific validity, translational/preclinical effort development, and quality of content, adherence to regulatory requirements, and adherence to Center for Cancer Research (CCR), National Cancer Institute (NCI) guidelines.

The medical oncology branch scientific review process is coordinated by the NCI MOB Office of Protocol Administration (OPA), an administrative support office for medical oncology branch principal investigators and affiliates.

Protocol Submission Deadline
The branch review deadline is each Tuesday of each month.
If a deadline date is a holiday, the deadline date will be the Monday before the holiday.

Protocol submissions (i.e. one WORD or PDF copy of a protocol) must be received electronically in the NCI MOB Office of Protocol Administration (OPA) by close of business (5:00 pm) on the deadline date. Protocols received after 5:00 pm on the deadline date will not be accepted for the next meeting, but will be scheduled for the following meeting.

MOB SRC Meetings
The branch review meeting is held each Friday of each month from 2-3 pm in the Clinical Center, conference room 13S235A. Meeting dates and times are subject to change due to holidays, etc.
