| The Humboldt River Basin Assessment is a multi-year program designed to evaluate the long-term effects of water uses in the basin on the timing and quantity of flow in the Humboldt River. The assessment began in 1995 in response to concerns that increasing demand for ground water and the need to dewater several large gold mines could have long-term effects on the flow of the Humboldt River and on the quality and availability of ground-water supplies. To date, assessment activities have focused on the middle Humboldt River Basin. This area includes most of the active gold mines in northern Nevada, several large areas of irrigated agriculture, a large power plant, and several small municipalities, all of which depend on ground water. |
