Adaptive Video Codec for Information NetworksCubic Videocomm, Inc., with funding from NIST's Advanced Technology Program, developed innovative wavelet-based video compression technology which has found commercial applications in video e-mail and industrial security. The technology compresses color images which include synchronized audio. A product which sends compact video files via popular e-mail packages, CvideoMail, is now available throughout the world in most retail outlets. Because the viewer can be sent with the video, the program does not require the recipient to have any special decoding software to view the e-mailed video. The technology is also very well suited to security applications, since the full image fidelity is preserved with each compressed frame. This also allows very rapid compression and efficient distribution over the installed network infrastructure, so that live video from a system of closed circuit television cameras can be viewed remotely on desktop computers. This is a major improvement over traditional solutions with bulky analog cables, video switches and a bank of TV monitors. Cubic Videocomm is employing this technology in a contract with the New York City Transit (NYCT) subway system. NYCT officials declared the project "was a tremendous success.
