"Berkeley Lab is an unclassified science facility, performing no classified research, and makes its facilities available for use by investigators from institutions throughout the nation and the world. It features an open environment that promotes free intellectual exchanges and collaborative efforts within the international scientific and technical community. Nonetheless, the Laboratory strives to provide a safe and secure work environment for its employees and guests. Its scientific mission requires that Laboratory assets and resources, both intellectual and material, be protected. We maintain and enforce strict policies on physical security and property protection as part of the federally supported U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory system. Any exception to these policies which warrants consideration due to national needs must be approved by the Director of the Laboratory, who will assess the exceptions on a case-by-case basis."

Steven Chu
Laboratory Director
