The City of Tempe has become one of the most pleasant urban places to live, work and play in the Valley of the Sun. Whether it be relaxing at Kiwanis Park, shopping and using the services in Tempe's many commercial centers, or spending an evening walking along the Mill Avenue District, the City of Tempe presents itself with a pleasant, well-organized artificial and natural landscape.

Part of the reason for this pleasant environment is the ongoing application of strongly supported development standards and the attention to detail, which can affect the image of the urban landscape. The Tempe Sign Program solidifies this environment, and it is  representative of the City Council's overall commitment to quality in a multitude of programs throughout Tempe.

SignsNearly 20 years before the blinking, flashing "neon sign jungles" of the 1960's began appearing across the nation, the City of Tempe launched its sign program with a one-sentence regulation buried in the volumes of the 1948 Building Code. From this modest beginning, the Tempe Sign Program has grown to one of national prominence. The resulting attractive environment has helped make Tempe one of the most sought after locations for successful businesses.

The aim of this page is to introduce both the development community and the general public to Tempe's program. Hopefully it will provide the reader with a sense of our objectives as well as explain the role the sign program has played in contributing to success story of Tempe.

Tempe's Goal

The City of Tempe agrees with the premise that people prefer attractive, pleasant environments in which to live, work, shop, and spend their leisure time. Further, it is the position of the City that such environments attract quality development and enhance property values.

Signs

The overall visual quality of Tempe has emerged as one of the strongest attributes. This quality is reflected in the attention to detail displayed in superior building design, lush landscaping, well-conceived site planning, and subdued signage. Every attempt is made to encourage attractive signage to complement, rather than detract from, individual projects.

The primary goal of the Sign Program is to maintain and enhance the appearance of the City, thereby enriching the overall quality of life within our community.
