Waste Reduction Assistant

Performs field work, administrative and educational duties in support of the Waste Reduction and Regeneration programs. Field work includes assisting with the Regeneration Program by building, monitoring, and maintaining compost piles, making compost tea and maintaining compost tea brewers, and operating heavy equipment (forklift, front-end loader); assisting with recycling, salvage, and refuse programs by assisting in handling, storing, and marketing salvaged materials, collecting and processing materials, and inspecting refuse and recycling containers. Administrative duties include assisting the Waste Reduction Coordinator with developing comprehensive waste reduction strategies, and developing reports and maintaining records of all materials diverted from the waste stream. Educational duties include leading groups of adult volunteers in composting, leading K-12 youth groups in experiential education, designing and implementing research projects, and developing outreach and education materials. Full time position with benefits.

Requires a bachelor’s degree and at least one year of waste management experience, or 4 years experience with recycling, compost and/or other waste reduction programs; and ability to read and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations; write reports and correspondence; present information and respond to questions; work with mathematical concepts, including the ability to estimate linear feet and cubic yardage; and ability to perform a range of physical activities, including the frequent lifting and moving of up to 50 pounds. California driver’s license required. Forklift certification or prior training with heavy operating equipment and willingness to work after-hours and on weekends are pluses.
