What is a Disability Program Navigator (DPN)?

  • Serves as a resource to the One-Stop Career Center staff, business and disability communities.
  • Facilitates seamless and comprehensive services for individuals with disabilities within the One-Stop Career Centers.
  • Facilitates universal access to the One-Stop System for individuals with disabilities.
  • Provides training on disability related topics and programs.
  • Increases customer satisfaction of individuals with disabilities within the One-Stop Career Centers.
  • Enhances the economic empowerment of individuals with disabilities.

Where are Disability Program Navigators Located?

Disability Program Navigators are located at the One-Stop Career Centers throughout the state. Community Connections: Strategies for Building Relationships with Employers, Service Providers, Schools and Other Local Organizations - With the advances in technology, the way businesses recruit has changed drastically. By developing and maintaining relationships with local employers you will be able to facilitate important connections for candidates who have barriers to employment.

Confidentiality, Disclosure and Case Notes - Topics of discussion include maintaining the confidentiality of your customers’ medical information, adherence to rules and regulations set forth by the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and how to use appropriate terminology in documenting case notes.

Regional Trainings

In April and May 2008, in response to a survey completed by One-Stop Career Center staff, the State Disability Program Navigator Team presented the following trainings:

Community Connections - This workshop was designed to provide the participant with strategies on how to develop community relationships with employers, service providers, schools & other area organizations to increase relationships & recruitments. Strategy discussions included the economics of hiring, employer research, networking, job posting resources, job description refining & the dos and don’ts of customer service. Assistive Technology and Accommodations - The morning portion of this workshop was designed to provide participants with information on what assistive technology and software does and how it can benefit job seekers. Below are the handouts and resources that were provided to participants, click on the title to view the materials.

  • Access and Accommodations PowerPoint - this presentation reviews items to consider when assessing the accessibility of the physical environment and services at One-Stop Career Centers.
  • Disability: Show Off Your KSAs PowerPoint - this presentation is a fun interactive way to learn about disability awareness. Presented in a Jeopardy format, categories include Etiquette, A&A (access and accommodations), The Dictionary, It's Ok, and Disclosure.
  • Matrix of Accessible Equipment - this document provides a listing of accessible equipment available at most One-Stop Career Centers in Maryland. The chart indicates who might best benefit from the assistive technology listed.
  • One-Stop Centers: Service Accessibility Checklist - Developed by the National Center on Workforce and Disability/Adult (NCWD/A) this document can be used to help ensure that One-Stop Centers comply with the law, create a welcoming environment for everyone including people with disabilities, and design services so that people with disabilities can fully benefit.
  • The 411 on Disability Disclosure - This workbook from the National Collaborative on Workforce and Disability for Youth assists individuals in making informed decisions about disclosing their disability.
  • Advising Youth with Disabilities on Disclosure: Tips for Service Providers - this fact sheet gives tips on how to assist individuals decide if he/she should share information about his/her disability.
  • Resources - this one page sheet provides state and national resources for One-Stop staff related to disability and employment.
  • Job Seeker Fact Sheets - In an attempt to answer the most frequently asked questions about employment as it relates to individuals with disabilities, a series of facts sheets were developed targeting job seekers. The National Education Center developed these fact sheets for the Maryland Department of Disabilities & the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
  • Business Fact Sheets - In an attempt to answer the most frequently asked questions about employment as it relates to individuals with disabilities, a series of facts sheets and a brochure were developed targeting businesses. The National Education Center developed these fact sheets for the Maryland Department of Disabilities & the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
