Outreach Support

National Outreach Services

The National Outreach Service Team brings together people, messages, and information so that the science and work of NOAA Fisheries Service is understood and appreciated. In addition to providing quick response to immediate situations for both internal and external audiences, the Team is at the forefront of long-range strategic communications planning. The Team provides communications advice and guidance, assistance in developing communications products and tools, and manages events and an aggressive exhibits program.

Exhibit Opportunities

June 2008

Capitol Hill Ocean Week: June 3-5, Washington, D.C. This event brings together a wide-range of stakeholders to discuss current ocean and coastal issues. Panel speakers include Members of Congress, as well as representatives of the federal and state government, industry, academia, and nonprofits. This year, the symposium will focus on the effects of climate change on the oceans. Topics include the state of the science (acidification, habitats), impacts (to natural resources, to humans), and solutions (sequestration, ocean observations, alternative/cleaner energy), as well as legislative updates.

August 2008

Louisiana Foodservice Expo and Seafood Cook Off: August 2-4, New Orleans, LA. Designed as a showcase for American seafood, the New Orleans show is a national outreach event. A bonus is the exhibit opportunity at the Foodservice Expo. More than 12,000 industry people attend this unique event sponsored by the Louisiana Restaurant Association – one of the largest business organizations in the state, representing 7,000 restaurant operations and related businesses. The restaurant industry in Louisiana is the state's largest private employer with more than 120,000 employed directly and another 50,000 indirectly employed. Restaurants in Louisiana generate $4.8 billion in annual sales. NOAA Fisheries Service supports the Expo by sponsoring the annual seafood cook off—bringing attention to the benefits of eating Gulf coast seafood. This event is important given the healthy benefits of seafood in American diets, and the fact that the Gulf area continues its economic recovery from the effects of hurricane Katrina.

American Fisheries Society Annual Meeting: August 17-20, Ottawa, Canada. The theme of this year's annual meeting is "Fisheries in Flux: How Do We Ensure Our Sustainable Future". This theme reflects AFS President Mary Fabrizio's Program of Work for her year in office, and addresses the ongoing challenge of confronting change when managing fisheries.

September 2008

American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Life at 50, National Event and Expo: September 4-6, Washington D.C. This is the AARPs largest event of the year. AARP members are active constituents in fisheries issues ranging from recreational fishing to the health benefits of seafood consumption. NOAA Fisheries Service will be present at the event to promote the services that we offer this active constituent group.

November 2008

Pacific Marine Expo: November 2008, Seattle, WA. Pacific Marine Expo is the largest commercial marine tradeshow on the West Coast. Serving all aspects of the market, including commercial vessels owners, commercial fishermen, boatbuilders and seafood processors, this annual event covers it all.

World Recreational Fishing Conference: November 10 -13, Dania Beach, FL. The WRFC is a forum through which to address fisheries issues specific to recreational fishing community. The 5th WRFC will provide a focused and dynamic agenda to address issues of importance today and the future. Leaders representing the sport fishing community from around the world will gather in an environment where they can get to know one another and exchange ideas on addressing real issues impacting the sport of fishing.
