The new Presidential Active Lifestyle Award recommends counting the minutes of activity or measuring the number of steps with a pedometer to promote regular physical activity. Does Exercise Alter Immune Function and Respiratory Infections? (June 2001)
The author discusses the relationship between exercise and the immune system and cites numerous studies showing that people who exercise regularly report fewer colds than their sedentary peers. Healthy People 2010: Physical Activity and Fitness (March 2001)
The authors review Healthy People 2010, the national disease prevention and health promotion initiatives for the next decade, identified by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. For the first time, ten Leading Health Indicators (LHI) have been identified, which highlight the major health priorities for the nation. They include individual behaviors, physical and social environmental factors, and health systems affecting the health of individuals and communities. Physical Activity tops the LHI list. Includes a summary of the 15 goals within the physical activity and fitness focus area (focus area 22) of Healthy People 2010.
