Name: Lisa Auermuller

What is your expertise or focus area?
My expertise is with outreach and education programs. I oversee all these types of programs for the JC NERR. This includes our K-12 teachers program, our public lecture series, our recreational programs, our family programs, the JC NERR Life on the Edge Interpretative Center, the Coastal Training Program and our volunteer program.

What education, training, and experiences led you to your current job with the NERRS?
I have both an undergraduate and masters degree in marine science. I came to the JC NERR right from UNC-Chapel Hill, where I was a graduate student.

What are some interesting aspects of your job?
Seeing how excited people get when you tell them something they didn’t know about our estuaries. Everyone is naturally fascinated by our coasts and our oceans, so it makes what we do very fun and exciting for people.

What is the most unusual or most unexpected thing that has happened to you while working with or in estuaries?
Almost getting stuck in a muskrat hole while doing a site profile of one of our potential land acquisition sites.

What is your proudest achievement in your job?
Taking the Coastal Training Program from its infancy to a full-fledged, highly respected program. We are considered by many in southern New Jersey to be the premier resource for science based information. I am very proud of that.
