WASHINGTON, D.C. - On February 19th, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) South Iraq Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT), in collaboration with the Iraqi people, unveiled the new Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Nasiriyah, the capital of Dhi Qar provence.

The Business Development Services provide Iraqis with the training necessary to establish their own successful businesses. The Dhi Qar PRT previously sent four groups of aspiring business men and women from Dhi Qar, Maysan and Muthanna provinces to the Erbil Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in order to introduce them to the business services provided by the SBDCs and to initiate the demand for these types of business development services in the southern region. However, as an important economic center in its own right, it was determined that Dhi Qar would benefir from its own Small Business Development Center. The Nasiriyah SBDC will be the first of its kind in the southern part of the country and also the first regional SBDC providing business development services to Dhi Qar, Maysan and Muthanna.

Approximately 150 leading members of the Dhi Qar and Muthanna business communities, the Provincial Council and the Iraqi Army, attended the opening of the SBDC.

Since 2003, USAID has been committed to improving the lives of Iraqis, by encouraging economic growth, supporting democracy, rehabilitating health and education systems and providing humanitarian assistance to displaced and vulnerable populations
