Developed by the US Department of Agriculture, the Interactive Healthy Eating Index (IHEI) is an interactive dietary intake assessment tool, providing a quick summary measure of a person's overall dietary quality in terms of current dietary guidance. Accessed via the Internet, the IHEI is based on the 10 components of the Healthy Eating Index (HEI), each representing a different aspect of a healthy diet for Americans 2 years and older as defined by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and USDA's Food Guide Pyramid. Developed using Microsoft Visual InterDev 6.0, the IHEI allows nutrition educators, health care practitioners, and consumers to quickly calculate dietary quality. A Web Server processes input by the user on age, gender, and dietary intake. Based on this user information, the system will calculate the overall HEI score, its 10 component scores, and nutrient intake of up to 25 nutrients and dietary components. HEI scores are statistically compared to scores of individuals of a similar gender-age category, and nutrient intakes are compared to recommended values. A summary printout provides information on how well the user's diet quality compares to that of other Americans. Additionally, user scores interface with dietary advice based on Federal dietary guidance.
