Commerce Will Apply U.S. Anti-subsidy Law to Imports from China

Washington (March 30)—Secretary Gutierrez announced today in a press conference the Commerce Department will apply U.S. anti-subsidy law to imports from China. This is the first time countervailing duties will be imposed on imports from a non-market economy, altering a 23-year old bipartisan policy of not applying the countervailing duty (CVD) law to non-market economy countries. Gutierrez Hails Solid GDP Growth for 2006

Washington (March 29)—Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez today released the following statement on the final fourth quarter real gross domestic product (GDP) report, which showed that the American economy grew at 2.5 percent in the fourth quarter of 2006: “Today’s GDP report rounded out 2006 as a very solid year with growth above the 15-year average. Commerce Department Issues New Public Communication Policy

Washington (March 29)—The U.S. Department of Commerce today issued a new public communication policy designed to promote broad public understanding of the work of the Department and its employees. The policy was developed with significant input from employees, and reaffirms the Department’s principles of openness and transparency, provides a “carve-out” for scientific research communications and puts in place an appeals process to handle concerns or issues raised with the policy’s implementation. Beijing (March 27)—Commerce Under Secretary for Intellectual Property and Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Jon Dudas is in Beijing this week meeting with heads of China’s patent, trademark and copyright offices to discuss IP protection and enforcement challenges. Assistant Secretary Kneuer Discusses Steps to Continue Wireless Industry’s Growth

Orlando, Fla. (March 27)—John Kneuer, Assistant Secretary for Communications and Information, spoke at the CTIA Wireless Convention on the Administration’s steps to facilitate continued growth in the wireless industry. Working with the FCC, the Administration has made additional spectrum available for broadband services, which will enable wireless hotspots to cover entire cities and hard-to-serve rural communities.

Commerce Under Secretary Discusses U.S.-China Commercial Ties

Secretary Gutierrez and Russian Ambassador Ushakov Discuss U.S.-Russia Economic Relations

Washington (March 26)—Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez and Russian Ambassador Yuri Ushakov met today in Washington, D.C. to discuss greater access for U.S. businesses to Russia's growing economy and expanding U.S. and Russia economic ties. U.S. exports to Russia have grown an average of more than 20 percent annually for the past three years, and topped $4.7 billion in 2006.
