The National Human Genome Research Institute provides a wide range of programs aimed at furthering the professional training and career development of students, educators, health professionals and research scientists. This page describes the various training and educational opportunities available for individuals at various stages of their careers.

Feb. 21, 2008 NHGRI Intramural Health Disparities Postdoctoral Fellowship Program
  • Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree in biomedical, clinical or behavioral research.
  • No more than two years of relevant research experience since earning their degree.
  • Curriculum vitae, a cover letter describing research interests and the names of three to six NHGRI Investigators that share a common research interest with the applicant.
  • The names of three references for letters of recommendation.

  • For recent graduates who would like to pursue multidisciplinary training in genomics and health
  • Curriculum vitae, a 1- to 3-page letter of research interests and the names of three potential referees

Feb. 11, 2008 Health Disparities Visiting Faculty Program
  • Doctoral degree or professional terminal degree
  • Conducting research compatible with the research at NHGRI's Division of Intramural Research
  • Independent faculty-level investigators with demonstrated excellence in a clinical, basic research or social science discipline
  • Affiliated with a grantee of NCMHD's Centers of Excellence in Partnerships for Community Outreach, Research on Health Disparities and Training (Project EXPORT)
  • Affiliated with a grantee of NCMHD's Research Infrastructure in Minority Institutions (RIMI) program or employed by a predominately minority serving institution

  • M.D.
  • Completed U.S. residency training program in clinical genetics,
  • Board eligible or board certified in clinical genetics
  • Valid, unrestricted U.S. license

Jan. 14, 2008 Medical Genetics Residency Training Program
  • M.D.
  • Completion of a primary residency and board certification or board eligibility.
  • Board-eligible or certified in residency speciality
12 to 18 months prior to proposed start date
Jan. 14, 2008 Medical Genetics Fellowship Training Program
  • Established by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG)
  • For clinical genetics: two years in an accredited residency training program in the United States and board eligible or board certified in the primary residency
  • For other sub-specialties: a Ph.D. degree earned from a U.S. university or equivalent education with prior ABMG approval
12 to 18 months prior to proposed start date
Dec. 3, 2007 Physician-Scientist Development Program
  • Board-certified physicians or eligible in an appropriate specialty
  • Training complete within the past five years
  • Research aptitude and commitment

  • Enrolled at least half-time in high school or college.
  • Citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited American college or university
  • Undergraduate courses in biochemistry and genetics
  • Prior counseling experience (either paid or unpaid)
  • Prior coursework in statistics
