Each compressed Viking Orbiter image file has a unique name constructed from the image_id of that image. The general form of an image is nnnxss. The 'nnn' is the orbit in which the image was acquired. The 'x' indicates the spacecraft that acquired the image. The values of 'x' are usually A for Viking Orbiter 1, B for Viking Orbiter 2, and S for the final survey phase of Viking Orbiter 1's extended mission. The letter X indicates a Viking Orbiter 1 image acquired in an orbit with more than 100 images. include The 'ss' is a sequence number for images acquired within one orbit.

The letters C and D indicate images acquired by Viking Orbiter 1 and 2, respectively, before orbit insertion. These are not used in this atlas since the atlas is intended as a tool for finding high-resolution images.

Each high-resolution image has its own page in the Mars Atlas. It includes a 1/8-scale version of the image, some icons showing some of the image parameters, and one or more links to the area(s) of Mars containing the image, which lets you find images of nearby spots, or the same spot from different angles.

Because these files are stored in a UNIX filesystem and access time appears increase linearly with the number of files in the directory, they are stored in a deep hierarchy. The page for an image with id nnnxss has the URL .../Atlas/Mars/VO/f/x/nnn/ss.html
