CATALOOCHEE HORSE CAMP, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, NC

Description:

The Cataloochee horse camp is located on the east side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and approximately 35 miles from Asheville, NC. Park horse camps have few amenities but offer access to miles of nearby horse trails.

The nearest convenience store is 11 miles away on U.S. 276. Full service grocery stores and medical facilites are located Waynesville, NC.

Alerts and Important Information

FOOD STORAGE: Black bears and other wildlife inhabit the area. Special regulations apply to the storage of food and garbage, as well as horse feed, and they are strictly enforced.

FIREWOOD QUARANTINE: Firewood from the states of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio and the lower peninsula of Michigan is quarantined due to an insect infestation. Please help protect park forests and do not bring firewood from those states.

HOOK UPS: There are no hook-ups or potable water at this campground. Water for horses is available from the nearby stream but you must bring your own drinking water.

QUIET HOURS: Quiet hours are in effect from 10 PM to 6 AM. Generator use is restricted to 8AM to 8 PM.

FIRES: Fires are allowed in fire rings only.

STAY/SITE LIMITS: Horse camps are limited to 4 horses and 6 people per site. The park stay limit is 7 consecutive days from 5/15-10/31 and 14 consecutive days from 11/1 through 5/14, the purpose of which is to allow more people to stay in a public campground. A day-by-day extension of the seven-day limit may be requested at the campground kiosk, not to exceed a total consecutive stay of more than 14 days. Reservations which exceed the 7-consecutive-day limit be cancelled and refunded.

FISHING: A Tennessee or North Carolina fishing license is required to fish in the park. Licenses are available in nearby towns at <$30. Special regulations apply in the park: single hook, artificial flies or lures only---no bait.

HORSES: Horse stalls are not covered and may not be visible from your campsite. Horses cannot be tied to trees or kept at your campsite. All horses must be accompanied by a current Coggins test.There are no longer two horse stalls. There are now horse racks at each stall, each able to accomadate four horses.

Take I-40 east from Knoxville, TN or west from Asheville, NC. Exit I-40 at NC exit 20, twenty-five miles west of Asheville (87 miles east of Knoxville). Turn right onto Cove Creek road 1/10 miles from I-40. Follow Cove Creek road approximately 11 miles to Cataloochee horse camp.
