The USITC report Year in Trade 1999 provides factual information on U.S. trade policy and its administration for calendar year 1999, including developments in trade organizations and programs including the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), Andean Trade Preference Act (ATPA), Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and APEC Individual Action Plans, Caribbean Basin Economic Recovery Act (CBERA), Caribbean Basin Trade Partnership Act (CBTPA), Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and World Trade Organization (WTO). Highlights include the WTO Seattle ministerial, OECD shipbuilding subsidy negotiations, passage of the Trade and Development Act of 2000, and a U.S. free trade agreement with Jordan. This report also reviews trade events with major partners, notably Canada, European Union (EU), Mexico, Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, and Brazil, including U.S. granting Permanent Normal Trade Relations (also called Most-Favored-Nation or MFN status) to China. It also summarizes administration of U.S. trade laws and regulations during 1999.
