Thinking Globally - Working Locally: A Conference on Food Safety Education.

Call for Abstracts

Poster Sessions/Educational Exhibits

You are invited to submit abstracts for poster sessions/educational exhibits. Abstracts must present an aspect of food safety education related to consumers or food service workers and focus on these types of programs:

  • Food Safety Behavior Research. Information on methodology of food safety education for consumers or food service, program evaluation, case studies, risk communication, etc. Include a brief description of the research methodology, the major results and conclusions, and the implication of these results to food safety education.
  • Educational Programs for Food Service Workers. These abstracts should highlight programs that go beyond "training" and are designed to change behaviors of food service workers. Programs that incorporate the principles of social marketing are encouraged. Abstracts should include a statement of purpose or objectives, unique characteristics of the program, description of the program including materials developed and/or used, potential usefulness to other educators, and the evaluation component to assess the effectiveness of the program.
  • Consumer Food Safety Educational Partnerships, Programs, and Materials. These abstracts should highlight innovative consumer education programs that foster behavior change. Abstracts should include a statement of purpose or objectives, unique characteristics of the program, description of the program including materials developed and/or used, potential usefulness to other educators, and the evaluation component to assess the effectiveness of the program.

    Include projects specific to:
    • Risk Communication
    • Communicating Science
    • Building and Maintaining Educational Partnerships
    • Using Social Marketing Techniques to Educate Consumers
    • Funding Issues/Successfully Writing Grants
    • Reaching Multi-lingual Audiences
    • Reaching At-Risk Populations
    • Reaching Children
    • Using New Technology to Develop Educational Materials
    • Educating Consumers about Biosecurity Issues

Poster Session/Educational Exhibit Specifics

Materials may be displayed on the 4' x 8' posterboard provided or exhibited in a 8' x 10' draped booth (bulletin board/booth provided at no additional cost). An information package will be sent to you if your poster session or educational exhibit is accepted.

Submitting Abstracts

  • updatedAbstracts must be submitted electronically via e-mail by Friday, June 14, 2002.
  • The body of the abstract must be no more than 250 words. Also include the following: title of submission; the author's name, title, organization/affiliation, address, phone number, fax number, and e-mail address.
  • E-mail your abstracts to foodborne@nal.usda.gov. Abstracts may be included in the body of the e-mail message or sent as an attachment (WordPerfect or Microsoft Word documents). Mac versions will not be accepted.
  • You will receive a confirmation of receipt via e-mail within 5 days. If you do not receive a confirmation, contact Cindy Roberts at (301) 504-6365 or croberts@nal.usda.gov.
  • Presenters will be notified by e-mail on or before June 14, 2002, on the acceptance of their abstract.

All presenters and exhibitors must pay the registration fee for the conference and are responsible for their own lodging and transportation costs.
