The Division of Extramural Research
The Division of Extramural Research (DER) provides scientific administration and management of the National Human Genome Research Institute's grants, cooperative agreements and contracts programs. In consultation with the broad scientific community, the DER supports funding for research, training and career development in genomics at sites across the nation. The DER is also the locus for international collaborations at the National Institutes of Health for genomic research.

Researchers Produce First Sequence Map of Large-Scale Structural Variation in Human Genome
A nationwide team of researchers, funded in part by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has produced the first sequence-based map of large-scale structural variation across the human genome. The work, published today in the journal Nature, provides a starting point to examine how such DNA variation contributes to human health and disease.

NHGRI-Funded Researchers Produce Epigenomic Map of Mustard Weed
A team of researchers, supported in part by NHGRI, have published an epigenomic map of the mustard weed, Arabidopsis thaliana, pinpointing the locations of chemical marks that can affect the regulation of gene activity and expression that are not dependent on gene sequence. The scientists think the methods used on the lowly mustard weed can someday be scaled up to the much larger human genome to understand how epigenetic changes contribute to human health and disease.
