Project Description: This project builds on activities from the first funding period including maintaining and further developing the Puerto Rico Health Services Research Institute (PRHSRI) at the University of Puerto Rico Graduate School of Public Health to establish an administrative structure to support and foster the development of health services research with an emphasis on health disparities.   The long term objective is to extend the pilot projects into more comprehensive comparative studies comparing the health of Puerto Ricans on the island and on the U.S. mainland.

Three research projects are:

  • Health Seeking Behavior and Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Utilization Patterns in Puerto Rico Implications for Health Policy and Administration.
  • Development of a Spanish Version of the Primary Care Assessment Tool.
  • Social Environment and Family Factors Associated with Childhood Obesity among Elementary School Students (1st to 6th Grade) from Public and Private Schools in Cayey, Puerto Rico.
