WHO MAY APPLY: These two (2) positions are open to all qualified King County career service employees who are members of International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 286 holding the same classification as the vacant position, all other King County career service employees, executive branch regular exempt employees, current probationary employees who achieved career service status in a previous position, and the public. Bargaining unit members will receive first consideration. This recruitment is an effort to fill two (2) full-time career service positions and to create a list of competitive candidates to fill similar vacancies in the Building Services Section that may occur throughout the year.

WORK LOCATION:  Work locations may include the Regional Justice Center (Kent), the King County Courthouse Complex (downtown), the King County Correctional Facility (downtown), and other County owned/maintained outlying buildings.

 

WORK SCHEDULE: This position is overtime eligible and works a 40-hour week.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES INCLUDE:

 

QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of experience, and demonstrated ability in operating, troubleshooting and repairing large-scale industrial, heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment, including boilers and pneumatic/digital (DDC) control systems; be qualified at the journey level on computer, mechanical or compressor repair and pneumatics; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have a Grade Three Steam Engineer License, a Refrigeration Operating Engineer’s License, and Universal EPA Technician Certification.  Applicants must be available for call in and call back, for which appropriate premiums will be paid.  At the time of the appointment, the candidate must possess a valid Washington State driver’s license or the ability to travel throughout King County in a timely manner in a variety of County vehicles.  The selected applicant will be required to successfully pass a pre-employment physical examination and a thorough background investigation.

 

Candidates who do not possess the minimum qualifications for journey-level work may be appointed to the Operating Engineer I classification, and expected to obtain all journey-level qualifications (which include Grade #3 Steam Engineer and Refrigeration Operating Engineer licenses) within twelve (12) months, as a condition of continued employment.

 

SELECTION PROCESS:  Applications will be screened for clarity, completeness and qualifications.  The most competitive candidates may be invited to a panel interview and a written and practical exercise.  Finalists may interview with the supervisor.  Reference checks may be conducted prior to any offer of employment.
